Mother of 6-year-old who brought gun to Va. elementary school gets new hearing date

NORFOLK, Va. — A new hearing date was set for the mother of a 6-year-old who brought a handgun into Norfolk’s Little Creek Elementary School nearly two months ago as attorneys in the case seek additional evidence.

The mother, whom The Virginian-Pilot is not identifying to avoid inadvertently identifying the child, appeared in juvenile and domestic relations court Wednesday morning. She is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and allowing access to a loaded firearm by children, both misdemeanors.

No further details on the case were made public, and the case was pushed back to June 22 as attorneys wait to gain access to such evidence as video and cell phone records.

On Feb. 16, police were called to Little Creek Elementary at around dismissal time for a report of a student having a weapon in school. Officers arrived after students were released, and the handgun was turned over to police by a school staff member. No injuries were reported.
