We love the Oscars and every year, just like you, we look forward to seeing the world's finest couture creations paraded down the red carpet, on the backs of our favourite A-list actresses.
BUT if we're being really honest, we love the fashion can-you-believe-it-moments just as much...maybe sometimes just that little bit more.
After all, who can forget Cher back in 1986 in her Vegas show girl meets Last of the Mohicans outfit? And you can't really have a conversation about Oscars fashion without mentioning Bjork's 2001 egg -laying swan dress stunt.
These are the moments that have made the ceremony truly memorable, so yes, on Sunday night when we turn on the TV, we'll be praying for more like these.
So to get you in the mood here are a just a few of our favourite show-stopping gowns and never-before-seen fashion moments that we know we'll be talking about for years to come.
Cher, 1986
If she could turn back time, she probably wouldn't because while the whole world questioned this outfit, we're still talking about it (and her) today.
Fashion snobs may have turned their noses up at the time but Cher's Oscars attire remains legendary and a pop culture moment decades on from its outing on the red carpet.
Bjork, 2001
The Icelandic singer provided one of the most iconic Oscar fashion moments ever, in this swan dress designed by Macedonian designer Marjan Pejoski. Bjork even pretended to lay an egg on the red carpet. Pure gold.
Céline Dion, 1999
Céline took a big risk at the 1999 Oscars and certainly stood out amongst a sea of traditional gowns in this backwards tuxedo, designed by John Galliano and paired with a dapper slanted-brim hat.
“When I wore that, everyone was wearing dresses, not pants,” she later recalled. “I was the only one with pants in a backward suit from Galliano, and if I would do this today, it would work. It was avant-garde at the time.”
Lizzy Gardiner, 1995
Lizzy, an Australian costume designer who won the Oscar the same year for best costume design, walked the red-carpet in a dress made out of 254 American Express Gold cards, all joined together by wire.
“On the night it really upset a lot of people,” Gardiner later said. “A lot of women, I think they felt upstaged or pissed off that I wasn’t taking things as seriously as I should.”
Billy Porter, 2021
Billy Porter can always be relied on to smash gender expectations and add a bit of fun to a red carpet.
The stylish star turned heads back in 2021 as he arrived for the 93rd Academy Awards in a skirt-suit tux-inspired ensemble.
Shirtless Timothée Chalamet, 2022
A man in a suit doesn't normally turn any heads on the red carpet, but Timothée Chalamet managed to shake things up at last year's Oscars thanks to leaving his shirt at home.
The Dunkirk actor dazzled as he posed in a sequinned black suit by Louis Vuitton – worn sans shirt - before heading inside the Dolby Theatre for the 94th Academy Awards in 2022.
Timothee's chic look was actually a number from from Nicolas Ghesquière’s spring 2022 womenswear collection.
Whoopi Golberg, 1993
Whoopi certainly caught everyone's attention, possibly for the wrong reasons, in this panto-inspired creation back in 1993, but many now see this outfit as a fun red carpet moment.
Under Whoopi's bold lime green-lined purple satin skirt was a surprising pair of equally eye-catching pants. And who could miss the matching shoes?
Pharrell Williams, 2014
The men that walk the Oscars red-carpet usually don't have much choice when it comes to their attire and stick to the trusty tuxedo - but not Pharrell.
In 2014, he opted for a shortened Lanvin tuxedo, showing off his legs in shorts and paired the look with shoes without socks.
Anne Hathaway, 2013
Anne made a last-minute decision to wear this pink Prada gown just hours before show when her original Valentino dress was deemed too similar to another leading lady's.
Valentino had already sent a press release confirming Anne's look, leading to critics perceiving the last minute change as snub.
Talking about the look, the actress joked: "It looked like my nipples were hard," before adding: "Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last-minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honour of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself. I deeply regret any disappointment caused.”
Janelle Monáe, 2020
Janelle Monáe sported a very different red-carpet look at the 92nd Academy Awards.
The Oscars can be hit with weather problems just like an other event but the American singer and actress was prepared in 2020 as she sported a silver glittery long-sleeved dress with matching hood.
Kim Basinger, 1990
Kim decided to buck the red-carpet trend of picking high-luxury labels and try her hand at designing back in 1990.
Half gown, half tuxedo, the unusual ensemble divided critics although it's clear that whatever Kim wears she still looks amazing.
Geena Davis, 1992
She was nominated for her memorable role in Thelma & Louise in 1992, and although the leggy actress left empty handed she certainly made sure she'd be remembered with her red-carpet attire.
Angelina Jolie, 2012
Who can forget 'leg-gate' back in 2012? Angelina's Versace gown was a real show stopper and she looked as beautiful as ever.
Unsurprisingly, people could not keep their eyes off her pins with special attention being paid to her right leg which she showed off with a daring split.
A parody Twitter account called 'Angie's Right Leg' was set up, declaring, "I'm a leg, get a load of me!" and "You have to admit I'm one hell of a leg!" The account attracted over 15,000 followers.
Gwyneth Paltrow, 1999
While this moment isn't about her dress, we feel like we need to talk about this, just one more time.
In 1999 Gwyneth Paltrow hit the headlines for what was the most toe-curling embarrassing speech ever. Accepting her Best Actress award for Shakespeare in Love there wasn't a dry eye in the house....from laughing.
It still makes us cringe today.
Rita Moreno, 2018
Rita decided to recycle the Oscars gown she originally wore in 1962, when she earned the best-supporting-actress prize for her role in West Side Story.
The gown was made strapless for its second outing and the actress added a heavy gold necklace for added glamour.
Barbra Streisand, 1969
Barbra wore a sequinned entirely see-through pantsuit by Arnold Scaasi, fitted with flared legs and tuxedo cuffs when she picked up the best actress ward.
“I had no idea that when the lights hit that outfit, it would become transparent,” she said in a later interview. “I thought to myself, I’m going to win two Oscars in my lifetime, and I’ll be more conservative next time.”
Michelle Williams, 2012
Michelle Williams looked stunning in this burnt orange Louis Vuitton peplum gown back in 2012. Michelle has an innate sense of style and always stands out on the red carpet. This was a clear winner.
According to the label, it took over 300 hours to make at the atelier in Paris, and it was constructed with silk mousseline and organza ribbons.
We love everything about this look, from her gamine hair to the elegant jewellery and the quirky clutch.
Julianne Moore, 2015
We are big fans of Julianne Moore and love her red carpet style. At 55, she's never afraid to take risks and we can't wait to see what she wears on Sunday night. Julianne never lets the gowns wear her and always looks like isn't taking the frock game too seriously. She nailed it in 2015 in this Chanel gown.
Lupita Nyong'o, 2014
2014 was definitely Lupita's year. Not only did she win the best supporting actress award for her role in 12 Years A Slave, but she made it onto every best dressed list, making herself a house hold name. The colour, the cut and the fabric on this Prada gown were quite simply perfect.
Hally Berry, 2002
Who can forget Halle Berry's Elie Saab gown back in 2002? Accepting her Oscar for Monster's ball never has a dress done so much to the raise the profile of any one actress.
With a sheer embroidered top and full satin skirt, it was a risk that paid off and got her noticed for all the right reasons.
Jennifer Lopez, 2015
J-Lo made sure all eyes were on her when she presented an award in this nude embellished Elie Saab gown. The plunging neckline saved this fairy-tale gown from being too sugary sweet and princessy.
Jennifer Lawrence, 2013
2013 was J-Law's year. Not only did she win the Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook, but she made it onto every best dressed list.
Not surprisingly the face of Dior wore Dior...but it was undeniably breathtaking. Not even a rather embarrassing fall could ruin her night. And with a beautiful fluted train, the dress looked even better from behind.
