Most January deaths in Maharashtra due to comorbidities and not caused by Covid, say experts

PUNE: The deaths of several Covid patients in January this year were coincidental and not due to the disease though the casualty count increased last month four-fold compared to that in December last year, state task force members and hospitals treating coronavirus-infected patients told TOI.

Rahul Pandit, a member of the state task force, said, “A lot of patients were detected with Covid upon admission to hospitals, and thus, can be termed as ‘coincidental Covid patients’. They got admitted due to other severe conditions or health ailments carrying a mortality risk by themselves. The Covid death numbers seem to have gone up because such deaths were clubbed under the Covid deaths.”
