Morrisons, Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury and M&S urged to 'do right thing' over barbecues in fire service plea

Firefighters have appealed to supermarket bosses to ban disposable barbecues. In a number of social media posts, the London Fire Brigade yesterday (Friday, June 29) targeted management at several of Britain's store chains.

In a tweet to Morrisons referring to the chain's "make good things happen slogan", the brigade tweeted their message accompanied by a photo of one of the barbecues on sale there. And they asked bosses to remove the products from the shelves straight away.

The brigade, which has been dealing with many serious wildfires in the extreme heat and dry conditions of recent weeks, tweeted: "Evening, Morrisons, we wondered if you could help. You say make good things happen.

"Disposable barbecues increase the chances of very bad grass fires happen. Do the right thing and ban them from your stores. Thanks."

The brigade also issued tweets aimed at other supermarkets, including Marks & Spencer, Asda and Lidl, and retweeted messages from followers who had been contacting the supermarkets directly.

In another tweet, it tagged a number of other major supermarket chains. It wrote: "Our colleagues West Sussex Fire tackled a fire in Littlehampton yesterday that was believed to have been caused by a disposable BBQ.

"Isn't it time @Tesco @marksandspencer @asda @sainsburys and a host of others to stop selling these cheap barbecues that cause untold damage?"

The LFB also directed followers to a petition calling on the Government to ban the disposable barbecues, urging them to sign it. A number of tourist spots across the UK are already calling on visitors not to use them because of the danger of starting fires on tinder-dry grassland.
