Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury's remove popular item from shelves amid safety fears

Morrisons and Tesco have both removed a popular product following safety fears. And Sainsbury bosses say they are in “in contact” with their supplier of Elf bars.

Launched around five years ago, Elf bars have become one of the biggest companies to sell disposable vapes in the UK. But this week some supermarkets have pulled Watermelon flavoured ELFBAR 600s from their shelves.

For disposable vapes to be legal for use in the UK they have to have a nicotine strength of 20mg maximum and have no more than 2ml of the e-liquid. These requirements are set out by the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD).

The removal of products from the three major supermarkets comes after Watermelon flavoured ElfBars 600s were found with over double the legal amount of nicotine e-liquid. While Morrisons have removed all ElfBar stock, other flavours remain at Tescos and Sainsbury’s.

A spokesperson for Morrisons told ITV News “As part of our ongoing investigation into the legal compliance of ElfBar 600 disposable electronic cigarettes with Trading Standards, we have made the decision to remove all flavoured variants from sale.”

The supermarket went on to say the items would return to shelves once “stock that fully complies with UK legislation becomes available.”

Tesco and Sainsbury’s also put out statements explaining the product's removal, with Tesco's calling the removal “a precautionary measure,” while Sainsbury’s says they’re “in contact” with their supplier.

Watermelon flavoured Elf Bars are one of the more popular flavours ElfBar sell. A spokesperson for ElfBar said: “We found out that some batches of the Elf Bar product have been overfilled in the UK. It appears that e-liquid tank sizes, which are standard in other markets [such as the US], have been inadvertently fitted to some of our UK products. We wholeheartedly apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.”
