Morelos manager breaks silence over alleged drink driving accident

Alfredo Morelos’ manager at Atletico Nacional has broken his silence over the 28-year-old’s alleged involvement in a drink driving incident in Colombia that has hospitalised a motorcyclist.

According to reports from Colombian media, the former Rangers forward was arrested on Wednesday morning after his car collided with a motorcyclist near José María Córdova airport, in Rionegro, Antioquia.

The motorcyclist continues to be monitored in Vicente Fundación hospital for treatment after suffering broken limbs and abdominal trauma.

Atletico Nacional boss Efraín Juárez was asked about the club’s position on Morelos after their Colombian Cup quarter final win over Jaguares on Thursday, with the forward absent from the squad. “The Alfredo Morelos incident is an issue that the club is analysing and investigating,” he said.

“As I have always said, with the clarity that we have had since the day I arrived in August, we never hide anything.

At the right time, whatever decision we make about the circumstances of the incident, we will inform you. Obviously in the last few hours we were involved in this match and now we are thinking about Sunday's match against Fortaleza."

The Antioquia traffic and transportation section released a statement after the incident which read: “Alfredo Jose Morelos Aviles, a forward for the Atlético Nacional club, was arrested. He was driving a pickup truck, causing a traffic accident while driving under the influence of alcohol (Grade 2), resulting in personal injuries to Sebastian Guillermo Davila Valderrama.”

Morelos scored 124 goals over six seasons with Rangers, leaving the club in 2023 after the expiry of his contract. After an initial move to Santos in Brazil he returned to his homeland of Colombia on a loan deal this summer.
