Moreland trio charged over vote tampering

Police have charged three people with vote tampering in elections at a Melbourne council.

The trio were charged after votes went missing in the 2020 City of Moreland ballot.

When residents told election authorities they hadn't received their voting papers, authorities found the missing votes had already been lodged.

A 59-year-old Pascoe Vale man, a 51-year-old woman and a 25-year-old woman have been charged with conspiracy to cheat and defraud, conspiracy to commit an offence, make a false document, and theft.

They are also facing charges under the Local Government Act.

Detectives seized ballot papers and forensically examined them as part of the investigation.

They will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on February 25.

The City of Moreland has declined to comment on the case.
