More than 500,000 fans sign up to speak like Game of Thrones Khaleesi with Duolingo

Game of Thrones fans are well known for wanting to immerse themselves in every element of the show, from travelling to the locations to buying a wide range of merchandise from the traditional like t-shirts to quirkier things like limited edition Wolf Blass House of the Dragon wine.

But more than half a million die-hard fans have now signed up to learn the language of the Targaryen family themselves with educational app Duolingo.

House of the Dragon is airing on Sky and Now in the UK and has proved popular with fans and critics alike. Its second season was commissioned just five days after the first premiered.

Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the prequel focuses on the origins of the House Targaryen, including King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), his younger brother Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and the king's daughter Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy).

Tying in with the series Duolingo has launched an update to its High Valryian course adding more than 400 additional essential words and phrases used by the characters in House of the Dragon in all their political intrigue and backstabbing.

Since the show's launch Duolingo has seen a 155% increase in High Valyrian learners.

High Valyrian is now Duolingo’s most popular so-called 'conlang' or constructed language with 597,000 people using the app to learn and practice it, picking up the skills to command dragons like the Khaleesi, or pray like a Red Priestess.

The previous record was held by Star Trek staple Klingon, which 306,000 English speakers have tried their hand at.

Duolingo says 43% of users who sign up to study a conlang end up studying an additional, real-world language from the 40 they teach, furthering the firm’s mission of raising cultural awareness of global languages to people around the world.
