More than 100 free car parking spaces created in Salford

A new park and ride facility has opened in Walkden and will provide more than 100 free car parking spaces. Local residents will be able to park their car free of charge, before boarding tram, train or bus services to other parts of the city-region.

Electric vehicle charging points, motorcycle bays and a cycle hub the storage of 24 bikes will also be available, which is covered by CCTV and street lighting. The scheme is managed by Salford city council and provides secure bike storage for registered members using a smart app.

People can register for access - at a cost of £10 - to the hub online at www.salford.gov.uk/Walkden-cycle-hub.

Town hall bosses say providing better access to local tram, train and bus services is a key part of the Bee Network – Greater Manchester’s vision for a more integrated, accessible and affordable public transport system.

Salford city mayor Paul Dennett said: “It is fantastic news that Walkden park and ride is now open for local people to use. Now people can park their vehicle there for free and use the train to travel, which will help to reduce road congestion and also pollution. Cyclists can use the Cycle to store bikes for when they return.

“I’d like to thank Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), the Friends of Walkden station and their partners for their work to make this happen.” Meanwhile, ongoing construction is continuing in order to provide a £3.8million walking and cycling project that will provide a 6.2km connection for communities between Walkden station and RHS Bridgewater. The project is now almost fully complete.

Mr Dennett added: “Funding has been secured from the Department for Transport’s (DfT’s) Access for All programme to provide step free access at Walkden Station. We have lobbied and pushed for this and I want the works to start as soon as possible. We will continue to lobby and campaign for step free access at all our stations in the city.”
