
Sewage spilled into England’s rivers, lakes and seas from storm overflows for more than 1.87 million hours in 2025 even as drier weather cut pollution, figures show.
There were nearly 300,000 incidents when untreated sewage spilled from England’s network of storm overflows – which should only take place in “exceptional circumstances” to prevent sewers being overwhelmed in heavy rainfall and backing up into homes.
