More snow forecast for Falkirk with ice likely to cause travel problems

Further weather warnings have been issued across Falkirk - this time for snow and ice.

Forecasters say that wintry showers, with snowfall mainly on high ground, will lead to icy surfaces and perhaps making for difficult travel conditions.

The Yellow 'be aware' alert is in force from 8pm on Thursday February 25, until 9.30am on Friday February 25.

Up to 5cm could fall over the highest ground, with mostly sleet to low levels.

Falkirk Council say their Roads team will be monitoring conditions, in a post on Twitter, they added: "Cold and windy today with further snow and sleet showers this evening and a risk of ice and hoar frost.

"Our gritters will treat main routes from 4pm with further treatments in the early morning."

What to expect

  • Probably icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, leading to an increased chance of accidents and injuries
  • Some roads, and possibly railways, could be affected by longer journey times, particularly those roads crossing higher ground

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Further areas of rain, sleet and hail, with snow mainly at elevations above around 200-300 metres, are likely to affect many areas this evening.

"These will be heavy in places, perhaps bringing 2-5 cm of snow to some of the higher routes across the Pennines and Scotland.

"Beyond midnight, showers will become less widespread and will fall increasingly as rain or sleet away from some higher routes and parts of northern Scotland.

"However as temperatures fall, icy stretches are possible more widely, especially on untreated surfaces."
