Dublin City Council have promised to tackle litter left on the Grand Canal by revellers enjoying the good weather with extra resources.
Last Saturday morning, the Charlemont area of the canal was covered in pizza boxes, cans and bottles. Locals and passers-by posted images and videos of the filth to social media which caused a backlash.
Every summer when the weather is good at weekends, Dubliners flock to the canals to enjoy drinks and food with friends. This often results in litter being left behind.

Independent Councillor Mannix Flynn called on the Council to bring 24/7 cleaning crew. DCC have responded with a promise of six more bins for the area and extra allocation of cleaning staff.
A DCC spokesman said there are currently 10 litter barrels in the area as well as active cleaning staff up to 8pm on a Friday and from 5.45am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday. He added that the area is cleaned to "a vert high standard" by 8am each day.
The spokesman said: "In addition to the above, Waste Management Services propose to add a further 6 litter receptacles (barrels), and will assign additional staff and vehicle resources on a Friday evening.
"Waste Management Services have also contacted the Community Policing team at Pearse Street Garda Station and asked their team to monitor this area and bring enforcement proceedings against person/persons creating an offence under alcohol related legislation, as these public spaces are not “designated areas” or connected to licensed premises."
