Monster who gouged girlfriend's eyes out fails in freedom bid for sixth time

A thug who was caged for life after he gouged his partner’s eyes out in a horrifying domestic abuse case in 2011 has been refused parole for the sixth time and will remain behind bars.

Shane Jenkin, 42, blinded his partner, mother-of-two Tina Nash at her home during a 12-hour ordeal in which she battled for her life. He was convicted after a trial in 2012 at court.

Tina’s injuries were inflicted in what was described in court as a “premeditated, sustained and vicious attack”. Jenkin, from Cornwall, who has had parole turned down five times in the past, has once again been unsuccessful in an application for release on licence, reports Cornwall Live.

A spokesperson for the Parole Board told MailOnline: “We can confirm that a panel refused the release of Shane Jenkins following an oral hearing at the end of May. Parole Board decisions are solely focused on what risk a prisoner could represent to the public if released and whether that risk is manageable in the community.

“Reviews are undertaken thoroughly and with extreme care. Protecting the public is our number one priority. Under current legislation, he will be eligible for a further review in due course. The date of the next review will be set by the Ministry of Justice.”

In a written overview of its decision, the Parole Board added: “He had spent recent years in a regime designed and supported by psychologists to help people recognise and deal with their problems. There were plans for him to move to a different regime which was also designed to help people recognise and deal with a wide range of complex problems.

“The psychologist had completed an assessment on Mr Jenkin and presented the findings to the panel. The psychologist, Mr Jenkin’s probation officer in the community and the official supervising his case in custody all recommended that he remain in prison.”

Back in 2012, Truro Crown Court heard how Jenkin had strangled Tina unconscious as she tried to sleep in her bed at her home in Hayle, before gouging her eyes out with his fingers or thumbs.

Jenkin, who the court learned was suffering from a delusional disorder at the time, had then blamed Tina for the attack saying: “You are not going to see your kids grow up, it’s all your fault.”

Jenkin, who had a history of criminal convictions for violence, fled the scene after emergency services were called, but was caught two days later.

The court heard how Jenkin had watched a horror film with Tina the night before the attack. Andrew McFarlane, for the prosecution, said Tina was identified by police at the time as being “very high risk”, after suffering nine attacks from Jenkin since April 2010, including one where he put his thumbs in her eyes and another when he’d stamped on her head.

He said: “Jenkin was prosecuted for offences against Tina, but escaped conviction for his activity as a consequence of threatening her with the consequences should she proceed.”

In a statement at the time, Tina said: “I urge anyone suffering domestic abuse to contact the police before it is too late. Don’t be frightened or embarrassed.”

Tina went onto write a book about her ordeal.
