Monopoly world champion shares his top tips to win the game - and it's all in the rules

A World Champion of the popular board game Monopoly has revealed some of the secret tactics that could help you take home all the cash from your friends and family. Nicolò Falcone, a lawyer from Venice, Italy, is the reigning World Champion who pocketed over £20,000 after winning his final champion match in Macau, China.

Nicolò knows that for most people Monopoly is a board game that families tend to play around Christmas time and says that many can improve their chances of winning by taking note of his tips and tricks of the trade. He won the first World Championships seven years ago and it is staged every four to six years. With the 2021 iteration of the tournament cancelled due to Covid, he is waiting to see when he can get back out there and defend his title.

"People ask for tips and I tell them to buy three houses on each property when you own a complete set. Also, jail is your enemy at the beginning of the game, but your best friend towards the end," Nicolò told The Guardian.

"By then, if you go to jail, stay there for as long as possible because you can collect money off your properties but you don’t go around the board paying other players. There are also Monopoly 'heat maps' which show the places that are landed on the most."

He has also claimed that very often people will not read the rules properly and tells people to make sure they do as that can help you win the game much more easily.

He has even moved into comedy and has started working with Comedy Central. (Getty Images)

"Knowing them properly will help you win. For example, you can buy and build houses any time between other people’s turns, not only when it’s your turn," he said.

He seems to know the rulebook pretty well as he managed to win his championship game in just 47 minutes.

"That is not because I am the Maradona of Monopoly but because I know the rules. It shouldn’t be a five-hour game," he added.

Nicolò has even ventured into comedy with stories of his Monopoly career and is starting work with Comedy Central.
