Money Saving Expert warning for Brits travelling to Europe

Millions of Brits will be planning a trip abroad this year as coronavirus restrictions finally ease.

But anyone planning to visit any EU countries has been given a warning from Money Saving Expert.

The free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is being phased out following Brexit.

If you have an EHIC, you can still use it for now, but if not you'll need to apply for a new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).

The GHIC and the EHIC are both free and do essentially the same thing, Money Saving Expert says.

British travellers who have either card are entitled to the same medical treatment as a local resident at state-run hospitals and GPs in any European Union country and Switzerland

If you already have an EHIC, you can continue to use it in these countries until the card expires, even if this is some years away.

Once it expires - or if you don't have one - you will need to apply for a GHIC.

You can apply for a free GHIC here, and it is advised you do this at least two weeks before you travel to give it time to arrive.

While the cards offer some peace of mind, it is vital you still purchase travel insurance.

Money Saving Expert said: "A GHIC or EHIC doesn't always mean free treatment – where it doesn't, travel insurance usually covers it.

"Even in a state hospital using a GHIC or EHIC, you may still have to pay a substantial amount in some countries.

"Travel insurance should cover this, though using a GHIC or EHIC may mean you won't need to pay the excess.

"State hospitals might not be available, and you may be taken to a private hospital.

"Cancellation, delay, repatriation, baggage loss and theft also aren't covered."
