Money Saving Expert urges British Airways customers to get cash refunds from airline

British Airways passengers have been offered vouchers after their flights were cancelled due to Covid - but now the team behind Money Saving Expert have revealed how to get a cash refund instead.

This comes as British Airways were forced to cancel or delay more than 100 short-haul flights this week due to an IT issue, leaving thousands of long-haul customers to endure overnight waits.

But by law, BA must offer alternatives as soon as possible and get them on a flight, provide hotels, meals and pay compensation to any traveller who arrives three hours or more behind schedule.

Over the course of the pandemic, hundreds of flights were grounded due to restrictions and BA insists that customers were offered either a voucher or a refund.

MSE reports that some customers had difficulty in receiving their cash refund during the time as they claim they was no option online.

They add that BA issued more 3.3 million vouchers (alongside more than 4.2 million refunds) for flights cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

How to swap British Airways voucher to cash refund

As Money Saving Expert explains, anyone who made a flight-only booking and due to travel between March 9 and November 19 2020 can claim for a refund if the flight was cancelled. This includes where Avios was used.

However, cash refunds can only be given for unused vouchers that are more than two years old and BA say an email will be sent to you to inform you of this time.

For those who had flights cancelled after November 19, were offered either a cash refund or voucher, according to BA.

Vouchers issued before your flight was cancelled can't be transferred but can be redeemed on flights that are taken by September 30.

You can request a refund by using British Airway's online refund form but you need to fill out a separate form for each voucher you have.

These are expected to be paid out within 30 days and any Avios credit will go back to your account.
