Good morning. In the first stage of Israel’s war with Hamas, Palestinian civilians were urged to flee the north of the Gaza Strip and find refuge in safer areas in the south. After the collapse of the weeklong truce on Friday, it is the south that has faced the brunt of Israel’s attacks.
The focal point of Israel’s airstrikes and artillery fire for the last few days has been Khan Younis, the second largest city in the region. People have been ordered to evacuate the city, and now the Israel Defence Forces say that they have expanded ground operations “across all of the Gaza Strip”. An hour ago, Unicef spokesman James Elder described a sleepless night “of utterly relentless bombardments” in Khan Younis. There have also been reports of clashes between Hamas and Israeli troops a mile from the city.
