There was disappointment for Mona McSharry in her 200m European final despite making a strong start over the first half of the race.
The 21-year-old flew out of the blocks in Rome and was in second place as they reached 100m but wore down over the final two legs as she dropped down the pack.
Switzerland's Lisa Mamie took gold in a time of 2:23:27 while home favourite Martina Carraro scooped silver in 2:23:64.

Kotryna Teterevkova of Lithuania, who had led McSharry and the rest over the opening 50m and 100m, wound up completing the podium positions in 2:24:16.
McSharry clocked a time of 2:26.96. It may well have been a case of the American-based swimming star's busy programme catching up on her as she had also reached the 100m breaststroke final which took place on Saturday where she came fifth.
In last night's semi-final she had logged a time of 2:25.24 which was only 0.16 off her own Irish record.
But her Championships aren't over yet as she competes again in the 50m breastroke on Tuesday morning.
Andrew Coscoran impressed however as he booked his place in the 1500 m final.
Coscoran finished seventh in his heat and had to dig deep after being boxed in early in the race.
The Olympian powered to the finish line in a time of 3:38.74.
Fellow Irish athlete Israel Olatunde ran a personal best in his 100 m heat.
Olatunde clocked in at 10.19 and the blistering pace is just .01 off of Paul Hession's Irish record and the time was good enough to earn him safe passage into the European semi-finals.
There was no joy for Phil Healy in her 400m heat as she finished sixth in a time of 53.10 while Sharlene Mawdsley also finished sixth.
