Kentucky’s chapter of the anti-gun violence group Moms Demand Action is promoting “Wear Orange Weekend” with events in Frankfort, Lexington and Louisville Thursday and Saturday. Teri Carter, Moms Demand Action’s state communication leader, said the group was started by the mother of one of the Sandy Hook Elementary children murdered in a mass shooting in 2012.
“The purpose is to bring attention to gun violence and kind of the scourge of gun violence and to honor people who have been stolen by being shot.”
Carter said the Wear Orange campaign began eight years ago.
“It originated in June of 2015. On what would have been Hadiya Pendleton's 18th birthday and she was a teenager killed in Chicago. And her friends wore orange in her honor.”
Thursday’s rally in Frankfort begins at 11:30 a.m. on the steps of the Franklin County Courthouse. Saturday’s Lexington event will take place at 2 p.m. in Woodland Park.
