Moment Shinzo Abe assassin opens fire to kill ex-Japanese PM with homemade gun

This is the horrifying moment ex-Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe was shot dead while giving a speech in western Japan.

The disturbing footage shows the 67-year-old politician standing in the streets of Nara, western Japan, delivering a speech before there are two terrifying loud bangs as the shooter opens fire.

The person filming the speech then scrambles to the ground in fear but eventually manages to return the camera's focus back on the influential politician.

The footage then shows the gun-wielding suspected shooter being tackled by three security officers, around 11:30 am local time / 3:30 am BST.

The alleged gunman, who has been named as 41-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami, is tackled to the ground and one man in a black suit and face mask pins him to the ground.

A second man then pounces on top of the suspected assassin and the pair detain him.

It is understood that the suspect was wielding a homemade gun.

Mr Abe then holds his chest as he collapses, with his shirt visibly smeared with blood.

The gunshots resulted in wounds to the right side of Mr Abe's neck and to the left collarbone, the Nara City Fire Department said.

They continued that he was in cardiopulmonary arrest before being taken to the hospital.

Further footage of the assassin shows two huge plumes of smoke erupt as the shots are fired, and people then immediately run to help the fallen former Prime Minister.

Another angle shows the suspected shooter lurking in the crowd before he raises the double-barrelled weapon and opens fire.

Fuji TV has claimed that the suspect is a former member of the Maritime Self-Defence Force.

Abe was Japan’s longest-serving Prime Minister from December 2012 to September 2020.

Speaking before the announcement of Abe's death, Fumio Kishida, the current Prime Minister, condemned the "heinous" shooting in the “strongest terms."

While Abe's security team were around him, the former Prime Minister was sadly shot at close range "without being checked", it was reported.

The assassination is the first of a sitting or former Japanese Prime Minister since the 1930s and the horrific incident has rocked the nation where guns are very tightly controlled.
