Mohamed Salah's AFCON Win Could Elevate His Status in Egyptian Soccer

Mohamed Salah needs to win an AFCON to be considered among the greats.

In the world of African soccer, one name stands out above the rest - Mohamed Salah. The talented forward from Egypt has captivated fans around the globe with his incredible skills and goal-scoring prowess. Yet, there is still one title that has eluded him - an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory.

In many ways, Salah's quest for an AFCON triumph mirrors that of Lionel Messi's quest for a World Cup win with Argentina. While Messi is undoubtedly regarded as one of the greatest players to ever grace the sport, the absence of a World Cup trophy seemed to hold him back from reaching the pinnacle of greatness, alongside his compatriot Diego Maradona. It wasn't until 2022, at the age of 35, that Messi finally achieved this feat.

At the age of 31, Salah finds himself at a similar crossroads in his career. His next opportunity to claim an AFCON victory will be in the 2023 tournament, which has been rescheduled to January 2024 due to weather constraints. The window of opportunity is narrowing, and Salah needs to seize it soon.

When discussing the greatest African players of all time, Samuel Eto'o often takes the top spot. The legendary Cameroonian forward won the AFCON title twice with his national team in 2000 and 2002. Even within Egypt, Salah is not yet hailed as the greatest player, a title still held by Mohamed Aboutrika, who boasts AFCON wins in 2006 and 2008.

Fortunately for Salah, AFCON tournaments are held every two years, providing more frequent chances to solidify his legacy. By the time of the 2025 tournament in Morocco, Salah will be turning 33 years old. The subsequent edition in 2027, hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, will see him at the same age Messi was when he lifted the World Cup in 2022. The odds seem to be in Salah's favor, but nothing can be guaranteed in the world of top-tier soccer.

Though Morocco 2025 may provide the best environment for Egypt to claim an AFCON title with Salah, it is important to note that North African nations such as Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia will also pose strong competition. The road to success won't be easy, but Salah knows he must make the most of the present opportunity.

Salah's performance for his club, Liverpool, has been nothing short of outstanding. He has consistently displayed his ability to create chances and find the back of the net. Now, the challenge lies in translating that form to the Egyptian national team and rallying his teammates to contribute their best. The team, known as the Pharaohs, is certainly capable of achieving greatness.

'It's a great feeling every time you step on the field with the national team jersey. It's something I cannot take for granted,' Salah expressed with a sense of responsibility. He understands the weight of expectation and knows that success cannot be achieved solely by showing up. It will require hard work, dedication, and unity.

The AFCON tournament is notoriously challenging, with lesser-known teams displaying significant improvement and traditional powerhouses experiencing fluctuations in their performance. Each match is a battle, and no game can be taken lightly. Salah's humble approach and respect for the tournament serve as a solid foundation for success.

It is undeniable that Salah has already etched his name in the annals of African soccer. However, to truly cement his place alongside the likes of Eto'o and Aboutrika, he must lift the AFCON trophy at least once. The quest continues, and fans around the world eagerly await Salah's triumph on the grandest stage of African soccer.
