Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to battle for place at World Cup as El-Hadji Diouf plays key role

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are set to go head to head for a place at the World Cup after the Liverpool duo's respective countries were drawn to face one another in a play-off.

Salah's Egypt were paired with Mane's Senegal in the final round of CAF qualifiers, meaning only one of those African powerhouses can earn a place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

And former Liverpool winger El-Hadji Diouf had a hand in proceedings as he was one of two retired players helping out with the draw.

Diouf was the one who pulled Egypt before ex-Arsenal and Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor put his hand into another pot and picked Senegal.

The tie is set to take place between March 24-29, and will be a two-legged affair.

The Pharaohs were drawn as the home side, meaning Salah will welcome Mane and his team-mates to Egypt first before jetting off to Senegal for the return leg.

Egypt are hoping to appear at their fourth World Cup, their most recent campaign being four years ago in Russia.

They will hope to have better luck this time around if they make it through again, though, as they have never won a match in the finals in seven attempts, scoring only five times.

By comparison, Senegal have only been to a World Cup finals twice but have fared far better, shocking the world with a stellar run to the quarter-finals at the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea.

In the rest of the draw, Cameroon were pulled out to face Algeria while Ghana will go head to head with Nigeria.

DR Congo will also take on Morocco, and Mali will battle against Tunisia.

Naby Keita's Guinea did not make it to this stage of the qualification process, and so the Liverpool midfielder will not be on a plane to Qatar later this year.
