Mohali: Guns, illegal liquor found from Zirakpur housing society

MOHALI: Guns, illegal liquor and two-wheelers were recovered from a housing society in Zirakpur here on Sunday, according to the police during its ongoing drive to keep a check on hooliganism and unverified tenants.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vivek Sheel Soni said, "Around 60 policemen with support of teams of anti-riot police conducted checks at 'Penta Homes' on VIP Road in Zirakpur. The aim is to check the existence of anti-social and bad elements and also to push owners to get police verification of tenants."

Cops were heavily deployed in the housing society since morning as they started searching flats as well as vehicles entering and exiting the society.

Police claimed it recovered two weapons - a .12 bore rifle and .32 bore pistol - five two wheelers without any registration, 12 bottles of liquor only for sale in Chandigarh and some quantity of "white powder" which was being tested, said the police.

Zirakpur deputy superintendent of Police (DSP), Navneet Singh Mahal said, "We checked 782 flats and recovered arms, illegal two-wheelers and liquor bottles. The liquor bottles were recovered from one person. They were marked as only for sale in Chandigarh. Some of the tenants scaled walls of the society and escaped from back doors. The weapons recovered were registered but still are being verified."

The DSP said many landlords have been issued notices to explain why they should not be booked for failing to inform the police about their tenants.
