With nearly one crore Indians living and working across the Gulf region, New Delhi has placed their safety at the forefront of its diplomatic outreach.
The conversations come against the backdrop of a widening regional conflict involving the United States, Iran, and Israel, which has intensified in recent days. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India had earlier expressed “deep concern” following the commencement of hostilities in Iran and the Gulf region on February 28, 2026. The government urged all sides to exercise restraint, avoid further escalation, and prioritise civilian safety.
In an official statement, the MEA noted that the situation has worsened significantly during the holy month of Ramadan, with the conflict spreading to other nations and disrupting normal life and economic activity across the region.
India also underlined the strategic importance of the Gulf, not only due to the large diaspora but also because vital trade routes and energy supply chains pass through the area. Any major disruption, the MEA warned, could have serious economic consequences for the country.
New Delhi reiterated its firm opposition to attacks on merchant shipping, especially after reports that some Indian nationals have lost their lives or remain missing in recent incidents at sea. The government expressed grief over the casualties and extended condolences to the affected families.
Calling for an immediate de-escalation, India strongly reiterated its appeal for dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable path forward. The Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister remain in constant touch with regional counterparts as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement.
Indian embassies and consulates in affected nations are maintaining close contact with community organisations and citizens, issuing advisories and providing assistance to those stranded. The government affirmed that it will continue to closely monitor developments and take necessary decisions in the national interest to safeguard Indian lives and economic stability.
