The Detroit Lions made some head-scratching picks in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, taking running back Jahmyr Gibbs and linebacker Jack Campbell much earlier in the process than many anticipated.
That being said, there are plenty of talented players that fell out of the first round, and Detroit now has some extra capital to use in the second round.
With two positional needs already met, here’s what could be expected by the Lions on Friday night.
Round 2, Pick 34: DB Brian Branch, Alabama
Branch is unanimously regarded as the top safety in this draft class, and it’s good news for the Lions that he slid out of the first round.
This pick makes all too much sense as Branch is a versatile defensive back who can play both the nickel cornerback and third safety roles that Detroit utilizes in their defense.
As of now, veteran C.J. Gardner-Johnson will hold that role for 2023, but his contract is just a one-year deal. Drafting Branch would provide depth for the upcoming season while also preparing him for success in a starting role moving forward.
Round 2, Pick 48: OG O’Cyrus Torrence, Florida
Sticking with the theme of drafting for the future, Detroit has the chance to land the top interior offensive line prospect in O’Cyrus Torrence.
Torrence is a 6’5”, 330-pound mauler at the guard position who plays extremely physically in the run game. Pair that with the selection of Gibbs in the first round, and Detroit would have some security on offense for the future.
Torrence would likely compete for a job with Halapoulivaati Vaitai and Graham Glasgow at right guard if he were to be drafted by the Lions, but would provide solid depth at all three interior offensive line positions in 2023 if he’s not named a starter.
Round 2, Pick 55: TE Luke Musgrave, Oregon State
Musgrave may not be as popular as some of the other top tight end prospects in this draft class, but he fits the mold of what this team is looking for in a starting tight end.
Detroit’s tight end room is filled with capable blockers who can make plays when needed, but there’s no doubt that a true vertical threat tight end is missing from this offense.
Musgrave is a ridiculous athlete who has the frame to back up his speed and explosiveness. His skills as a pass-catcher would instantly upgrade the position for Detroit and give Jared Goff one more weapon to work with.
