SEATTLE - Rookie pitcher Luis Gil has been a godsend for the New York Yankees this season. The Dominican continued his fine form with a scoreless six innings against the Mariners to propel the Yankees to a 5-0 shutout win on May 23.
"He's got amazing talent, a great ceiling and he's delivering," manager Aaron Boone said.
And, at this point in time, that ceiling seems to get higher and higher with every new pitch. In 10 starts this season, Gil has a record of 8-2 and has won each of his five starts in May. Since the beginning of the month, Gil has pitched 30 ²/₃ innings and only allowed two runs on 12 hits for an ERA of 0.59, the best in MLB among pitchers with at least 30 IP in that span.
Gil wasn't expected to play such a huge role in the Yankee rotation this season, but a Gerrit Cole injury in spring training changed things for the Dominican.
Out of Gil's 949 pitches this season, batters where able to hit only 27 of them. The 25-year-old leads the Majors in hits per 9 IP with an average of 4.392, that's almost one hit less than the second-best pitcher in that regard (Dylan Cease - 5.339).
Last weekend, Gil established a franchise record by a rookie of 14 strikeouts in a single game, including a string of seven consecutive batters. In his last two starts, Gil has stroke out 22 of the 46 batters he has faced and only allowed three walks.
