SEATTLE - Right-handed pitcher Luis Gil continues to surprise everyone in the majors every time he steps on the mound. This time around, he pitched six scoreless innings while giving up just one hit, walked three and struck out six for his seventh win in a row.
The Dominican, who was named the American League Rookie and Pitcher of the Month for May, continued with his dominating form in the Yankees' 5-1 win over the Minnesota Twins and, after six scoreless innings, his ERA on the season is now down to 1.82, the second-lowest in MLB this season only behind Ranger Suárez's 1.70.
His opponents have a batting average of .153 against him. According to MLB's Sarah Langs, it's the lowest mark through a pitcher's first 19 career starts in the live-ball era (since 1920).
When you have hitters like Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton on top of a bullpen with individuals as gifted as Gil, it's easier to win games. And New York has done so six times in a row. They sit 2.5 games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles for the lead in the AL East and have the best record of any team in the American League (43-19).
Since the start of May, Gil's arm has been the dominant force in MLB, winning all seven of his starts with a 0.60 ERA, allowed just three runs, struck out 50 and walked just 15 batters in 44.2 innings.
With his scoreless outing against the Twins, Gil has now thrown seven consecutive games of six-plus innings while allowing one or zero runs, the longest such streak in Yankees history.
"I thank God for the opportunity to be here. I'm part of this team. It's so good to see [the team] play well," said Gil through team interpreter Marlon Abreu.
