How Does the Baking Soda and Aluminium Foil Method Work?
Silver can develop a dark coating called silver sulfide after prolonged exposure to air and sulfur-containing compounds. The aluminium foil method uses an electrochemical reaction to help remove this layer. When the silver is placed in hot water with baking soda and salt while touching aluminium foil, the aluminum acts as the reactive metal and gives electrons to the silver sulfide, which turns back into metallic silver. The sulfur is transferred from the silver surface to the aluminium during the reaction. Baking soda and salt help create the conditions needed for this reaction to take place.
Materials You Will Need
- One sheet of aluminium foil
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 to 4 cups (500 ml to 1 litre) of very hot water
- A heat-resistant container
How to Clean Silver With Baking Soda and Aluminium Foil
Step 1: Line the Container
Cover the inside of a heat-resistant container with aluminium foil, keeping the shiny side facing upward.
Step 2: Add the Silver
Place the silver jewellery or item directly on the aluminium foil, making sure it has contact with the foil.
Step 3: Add Baking Soda and Salt
Sprinkle the baking soda and salt over the silver item.
Step 4: Pour in Hot Water
Carefully pour the very hot water into the container until the silver item is completely covered.
Step 5: Let It Soak
Leave the silver in the solution for around 5 to 10 minutes. You may notice the dark coating becoming lighter during this process.
Step 6: Rinse and Dry
Carefully remove the silver, rinse it thoroughly with clean water and gently dry it with a soft cloth.
Things to Keep in Mind
This method is generally better suited to plain, solid silver items. Avoid using it on silver-plated pieces, jewellery with delicate gemstones, pearls, glued components or intentionally oxidised finishes, as the reaction, heat or cleaning process may affect their appearance.
