Mitchell and Webb comedy sketches axed from iPlayer over racism fears

  • The BBC has edited and removed several sketches from the Bafta-winning comedy series That Mitchell and Webb Look prior to its release on BBC iPlayer, stating that certain material “no longer works today”.
  • A spokesperson for the broadcaster confirmed that the decision regarding which sketches to retain from the show was made in direct consultation with programme creators David Mitchell and Robert Webb.
  • Reported cut content includes scenes featuring war re-enactors performing in blackface, a joke referencing Jimmy Savile, and a makeover show sketch involving a contestant wearing a burka.
  • In one of the omitted sketches, the comedy duo portrayed re-enactors attempting to stage a battle in the Democratic Republic of Congo before abandoning the idea upon realising it was racist.
  • Commenting on the removals, comedian Dom Joly defended the original sketches by highlighting that the intent of Mitchell and Webb was clearly satirical rather than encouraging racism.
