Mitch McConnell's prolonged disappearance from public view has sparked a fresh political storm after his chief of staff was confronted outside the senator's home and refused to answer questions about his condition.

Terry Carmack, McConnell's longtime chief of staff, was approached by a reporter on Monday but did not provide an update on the 84-year-old senator.
