A missing teen has been found driving with his mum's dead body in the boot of his car.
Tyler Roenz, 17, had been reported missing the day before along with his mum, Michelle Roenz.
Police responded to a car crash and found the car with a woman's body in the rear of the vehicle.
The teenager was taken to hospital with serious injuries while investigators tried to piece together what had happened.
The two were last seen at 11.40am on Thursday morning in Humble, Texas, with the car crash happening 850 away near Auora, Nebraska.
Police had been called Tyler's dad who told officers indicated his wife, Michelle, and his son Tyler were missing and that he was unable to contact either of them by phone.
The family car - a 2011 Mazda sedan - was also missing.
The Harris County Sherrif's Office put out a statement on the Friday morning calling on people to help find the missing pair.
It read: "Help us locate Michelle Roenz, 49, & Tyler Roenz, 17, who were last seen on October 13, 2022, at 11:40 am, in the 14700 block of Birch Arbor Court, Humble, TX 77396. They may be driving a black 2011 Mazda, TX License PGP2413."
By that evening the crash in Nebraska had been connected to the case with the driver identified as the 17-year-old boy.
According to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez the crash ended a police pursuit. He said: "With assistance from Nebraska State Police, a pursuit took place and the driver crashed out. "
The car had fled from an attempted traffic stop on Interstate 80 near Grand Island, Nebraska. This led to a high speed pursuit and a crash.
Gonzalez later provided another update saying: "The male driver has been identified as missing teen Tyler Roenz. Tyler is being treated at a hospital and said to be in serious condition.
"The body of a deceased female has been discovered in the trunk of the vehicle; the identity of the person remains unknown at this time. HCSO Homicide Investigators are coordinating with local authorities."
The body of the woman has since been identified as Tyler's mum Michelle.
Initial investigations indicate Michelle Roenz died from results of strangulation and blunt force trauma.
Homicide investigators are currently working with Nebraska authorities in extraditing Tyler Roenz back to Texas.
His injuries have classified as non-life threatening.
