A total air-swing on a Mankad attempt has cost Royal Challengers Bangalore a shot at victory in the Indian Premier League, with Marcus Stoinis starring for his Lucknow Super Giants.
Australian Stoinis (65 off 30) and West Indies' Nicholas Pooran (62 off 19) led the Super Giants' chase against RCB and they were only five runs short of the victory target of 213 heading into the final over.
They managed four runs but lost their eighth and ninth wickets in the first five balls of Harshal Patel's over, before all hell broke loose with scores tied heading into the last delivery.
First, Harshal charged in and spied Ravi Bishnoi trying to break away for a quick single to win early.
With Bishnoi well out of his crease, Harshal tried the controversial Mankad technique to run out the non-striker, but missed the stumps with his swipe as he ran past.
He then tried to throw the stumps down as Bishnoi dove back into his crease.
After a dead ball was called following the failed Mankad, Harshal was forced to bowl the final ball of the innings, sneaking a yorker under the Avesh Khan's bat, only for wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik to fumble the bouncing ball, unable to recover in time to throw down the stumps.
After his match-winning innings of 0 off 1, Avesh flung his helmet into the turf in delight as Bishnoi wheeled away after making his ground at the other end, having survived a second messy run-out attempt before leaping into the arms of his teammates who ran onto the field.
The victory had been set up by Stoinis and Pooran, who clobbered the fastest half-century of the tournament so far by reaching 50 off just 15 balls.
Stoinis smashed five sixes and and six fours, while Pooran cleared the rope seven times and hit the boundary four times.
It led Lucknow's recovery from 3-23 as they chased RCB's 2-212, which was set up by Australian Glenn Maxwell, captain Faf du Plessis and former skipper Virat Kohli.
The opening pair of Kohli (61 off 44) and Du Plessis (79 off 46) punished fast bowler Avesh (0-53) before Amit Mishra broke the stand when Kohli was caught at deep mid-wicket in the 12th over after adding 96 runs together.
Maxwell then smashed six sixes and three boundaries in his rapid knock of 59 off 29 before he was bowled off the penultimate delivery from Mark Wood.
