Scottish football has lost a true gentleman of the game as the Hotline united in tribute to former national boss Craig Brown. Sorrow and stories about a man less ordinary both as a manager and a man.
Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, said: "Scottish football has sadly lost its greatest ever national football manager, who was the best teacher in his class. Craig Brown was better known to everyone as wee Paw of the Broons. The most famous Brown of all, he was world class. R.I.P. Paw Broon, a true gentleman."
William Masson, Aboyne, emailed: "The tributes paid to the late Craig Brown are well deserved. A gentleman whose humility was one of his most endearing qualities. His record speaks for itself but he’d never reel off his achievements, he’d express his gratitude and fortune to have been there." Joseph Wilson, Ayr, said: "Whilst working in Prestwick I would often get the chance to talk to Craig briefly about all things football. It would be 'Mr Brown' this and 'Mr Brown' that and I don't know how many times he said "Call me Craig!" That was the mark of the gentleman."
Gordon Ferguson, Kilwinning, said: "It's a sad day for Scottish football with the passing of Craig Brown. He was the last Scotland manager to lead the nation to a World Cup and that showed the quality of his coaching ability. He also led Scotland to a win over England in the last Auld Enemy match at the old Wembley. He was a true gentleman. RIP Mr Brown."
Rob Pender, said: "What a lovely man Brown was. I remember being in the boot room at Shawfield and he invited me to join the managers for a wee nip. I could have listened all night to his stories and wit. RIP Craig, I will miss that smile." John Bruce, said: "Before the Celtic fans kneel once again at the altar of their returning Messiah they should remember one thing. The sequel is never as good as the original and Rodgers will probably head for the exit doors long before the end, if this turns out to be a horror movie."
Muir Fulton, Ayr , said: "Apparently Celtic are buying back Kieran Tierney for £30 million and giving him £60k a week. He's so soft that if he's tackled hard he goes down like a Saturday coupon so even Celtic fans are surely not that gullible to think he's going to make a return."
Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill , said: "It's a great Idea from Rodgers to search the Far East for new talent. No wonder Celtic are paying him so much for coming up with groundbreaking new ideas."
Eddie Easson, Ballingry, said: "Rodgers has the usual suspects on the Hotline running scared.. He is a proven winner unlike Michael Beale. Make no mistake about it, if Beale the Spiel's team isn't still in the Champions League and challenging Celtic by Christmas he'll be gone. After all, if you pay peanuts you get monkeys."
Alex Russell, said: "Simon Jordan believes that Rangers have set the standard that Celtic must achieve in European competitions. He harps on about them getting to the Europa League final which incidentally, they lost. He then airbrushes them from their European triumph of last season where they achieved the honour of having the worst ever record in the Champions League group stages. So, these are the standards Celtic must strive for? What planet do they dig up these cheerleaders from?"
Lance Little, Erskine, said: "Here we go again. The usual suspects running scared on the Hotline and mouthing Rodgers, who is a Rolls Royce of a manager, compared to their Skoda. With their crystal ball they also see us getting no points in the Champions League group. Is that not their forte as last season showed? They also need to try and get into a champions league first which isn't an easy task. You can actually smell their fear."
Neil Renton, Edinburgh, said: "It’s good that Martin Boyle will soon be back playing for Hibs. On his day he’s the best attacking player in Scotland. Fully fit he’ll help his side to be the third best team in Scotland."
