It is now 11 years since The Play That Goes Wrong landed at the Duchess Theatre and immediately established itself as one of the funniest shows around. Its depiction of the chaos which surrounds a production by the fictional Cornley Amateur Dramatic Society remains a piece of absolute genius, and since then the ensemble comedy company behind it, Mischief - founded by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields - has gone on to create several more hit shows including Peter Pan Goes Wrong (which also played on Broadway), this year’s Comedy About Spies and the imminent Christmas Carol Goes Wrong which is about to hit the Apollo Theatre for a limited run following a UK tour.
It is now a significant player in the West End and on screen (Christmas Carol had its origins in a BBC special and they have two series of The Goes Wrong Show on the iPlayer), a big operator you might say, though for Sayer and Shields, its all about keeping things down-to-earth and close to the spirit they had when they first formed an improv comedy troupe to take to Edinburgh Fringe each year.
