It’s going to be a night to remember if last year’s inaugural Mirror People’s Pet Awards is anything to go by.
It takes a lot to steal the show when sharing the stage with a giant 100kg mastiff, a dog who saved a baby’s life and a tiny horse.
But Robert Stuhldreer managed it when he dropped to one knee to propose to partner Mark Wilson, stunning award presenters Natalie Anderson and Charlotte Hawkins.
The couple were honouring Robert’s Akitas Flora and Kin, who won the Caring Animal gong.
Robert, from London, recalls: “It was an unforgettable night for all the right reasons.” The Mirror People’s Pet Awards, with official charity partner Dogs Trust, celebrate the remarkable bond between pets and their owners.
Last year’s winners included Hel the husky, who discovered an abandoned baby in a park, and Wilson the miniature Shetland, who delights young and old in care homes across Scotland.
Fire Cat, a kitten who recovered from devastating burns, also captured the hearts of the star-studded audience and awards host Judi Love last December.
Robert’s dogs transformed his life by warning him when his rare medical condition was about to cause a seizure or blackout.
The 61-year-old had been reclusive and suicidal until the dogs came into his life. He says: “It revolutionised what I could do.”
Sadly, Flora passed away last year and he was joined on stage by Kin and Astrid, another Akita, for the gala ceremony.
Nominations for this year’s awards in the autumn are open and the winners will be honoured at London’s Grosvenor House.
