A tragic incident unfolded at a rural hunting cabin in Hinckley, Minnesota, where a 31-year-old man allegedly shot his father nine times in what authorities described as an 'execution-style' killing. The suspect, Kirk Edward Hazlett III, of Cambridge, has been charged with second-degree murder and felony kidnapping in connection with the incident, according to the Pine County Sheriff’s Office.
The confrontation between Hazlett III and his father, 62-year-old Kirk Edward Hazlett II, turned deadly on November 15, leading to a 911 call reporting a shooting at around 8:44 p.m. The victim's brother, who made the call, informed the police that his nephew had shot his father.
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers found the elder Hazlett lying on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A postmortem examination revealed that the victim had been shot nine times, with one fatal shot to the head.
Witnesses to the incident reported that the suspect had arrived at the cabin armed with a gun, leading to a tense situation where they feared for their lives. Despite efforts to intervene, Hazlett III allegedly proceeded to shoot his father in a deliberate and calculated manner.
Investigations revealed that the suspect and the victim had a strained relationship for some time, with witnesses attesting to the ongoing conflict between them. The witnesses described Hazlett III as being coherent and not under the influence of any substances during the tragic event.
Hazlett III was promptly arrested and taken into custody at the Pine County Jail following the incident. The town of Hinckley, where the shooting occurred, is located approximately 80 miles north of Minneapolis.
