Millions of women offered free NHS home cervical cancer tests

  • Millions of women in England who have missed cervical screening appointments are to be offered free at-home self-testing kits on the NHS .
  • Eligible women aged between 30 and 65 will receive invitations via the NHS app, text message, email or letter to order a kit online.
  • The kits contain a swab to collect a vaginal sample at home, which is then posted free of charge to NHS laboratories to test for high-risk HPV .
  • Latest figures show only 68.8 per cent of eligible women are up to date with their cervical screening, below the NHS target of 80 per cent.
  • The scheme aims to encourage wider participation as part of the NHS target to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040.
