Meta launched its new app, Threads, today (July 6) and has already seen more than 10 million users sign up.
Facebook and Instagram owner Mark Zuckerberg, 39, pitched the app as a "friendly" rival to Twitter, which was bought by Elon Musk in October. The app is linked to Instagram and appears to be a direct competitor to Twitter which has been severely criticised recently over its new policies, with the most recent limiting users on how many tweets they can view a day.
According to Zuckerberg, since launching at midnight, the new app has received more than 10 million sign ups. He said: “I think there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion plus people on it.

"Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn't nailed it. Hopefully we will." Threads is directly linked to Instagram so users can log in with their Instagram credentials to log in to Threads.
Users are then given the option of importing their display picture and external links that are associated with their Instagram account. They can also choose to follow the same accounts they do on Instagram, Meta says. However, users can create a new account where they can choose their name, bio and profile picture.
On Threads, posts can be shared to Instagram and vice versa and can include links, photos, and videos of up to five minutes in length. Threads also allows users to post up to 500 characters, and has many features similar to Twitter.
Currently, users are not able to interact on the app without an account although the California-based company hinted it will change this in the future. It's also important to note that all users under the age of 18 in the UK will automatically have a private profile when they join.
