Millie Bobby Brown announces details of ‘very person’ debut novel Nineteen Steps

Millie Bobby Brown is gearing up for the release of her first ever novel Nineteen Steps.

Said to be inspired by the true events of the 19-year-old Stranger Things actress’ family’s history, her first step into the literary world is described as “a moving tale of longing, loss and secrets, and the lengths that we will go to fight for love”.

Brown has worked with author Kathleen McGurl to bring the story to life, which will be published by HQ, an imprint of HarperCollins UK, on September 12.

Set in London in 1942, a synopsis of the book reads: “Despite the raging war, spirited 18-year-old Nellie Morris lives a quiet life in the tight-knit East End community of Bethnal Green. Her family and friends all tease that she will marry air raid warden Billy, the boy next door, who’s always been sweet on her.  The arrival of Ray, a handsome American airman stationed nearby, causes Nellie to question everything she thought she knew about her future.

“Her newfound happiness is short-lived when a tragic accident occurs during an air raid. Even those closest to her can’t escape the devastation of war, and as the secrets and truth about that fateful night become clear, they threaten to tear Nellie – and those dearest to her – apart.”

Describing the project as “very personal” to her, Brown said in a press release: “Inspired by my Nanny Ruth, this book is very personal and close to my heart. I grew up listening to stories about her time living through the war. I’m honoured to keep her story alive.”
