Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The situation is the same in India with cancer statistics revealing a worrying trend. The burden of cancer is significant, with over 1.4 million new cases and approximately 917,000 deaths annually in the country. Breast, oral cavity, and cervical cancers are the most common types.
What has set the alarm bells ringing is a study by the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program in the US, which found that individuals born between 1965 and 1980 (Generation X) are experiencing a greater increase in cancer than any previous generation. This includes not only leukaemia, thyroid, colorectal, kidney and uterine cancers, but an increased risk of all leading cancers.
