Mikey Johnston has been ruled out for up to three months.
The Celtic winger has suffered a further injury setback while on pre-season, it has been confirmed.
Brendan Rodgers has revealed the Republic of Ireland international will be out for the next few months at least.
The boss spoke to the media with the club on their warm weather training camp in Portugal.
And the news about Johnston comes as Rodgers was asked about the 24-year-old's future at the club.
Asked if Johnston would feature under him for a second time at Parkhead, the Hoops gaffer said: “His job is to convince myself and the coaches that he is ready for a place. Sadly for Mikey, he is going to be out for a few more months.
"He had an issue with his back, sadly, so he’ll probably be out for near on three months.
“But it’s the players’ responsibility and they have to show the quality and consistency and robustness in order to play and that is the job of every player.”
The injury means Johnston will miss Ireland's Euro 2024 qualifiers against France and the Netherlands in September.
The player was given his Celtic debut by Rodgers during his first spell in charge.
Johnston spent last season on loan at Portuguese side Vitoria.
Meanwhile, Mikael Lustig insists he couldn't have picked a better manager to replace Ange Postecoglou at Celtic than Brendan Rodgers.
The Parkhead hero reckons Rodgers can once again achieve huge success in the dugout in Glasgow.
After all, former Sweden international Lustig cites Rodgers as the best manager he ever worked under in his playing career.
