Mikel Arteta vindicates Stan Kroenke's £12m transfer masterstroke as Arsenal reap the benefits

If his performance against Manchester City wasn't encouraging enough, then Jorginho's display in the dramatic 4-2 win at Aston Villa on Saturday should have cleared up any doubt as to exactly why he was brought in.

The frustration and disappointment that was met with the Italian's arrival on deadline day last month was understandable considering the failed pursuit of Moises Caicedo, but Mikel Arteta made it absolutely clear that an extra body in midfield was required. It's believed owner Stan Kroenke and his son Josh had sanctioned the move for Caicedo, but with time - and options - running out, the green light was eventually given to secure Jorginho's services for just £12million.

As the interest made its way into the media, it's safe to say that it split opinion. A combination of his age, profile and the fact that previous business with Chelsea had not been the most successful, left supporters convinced that Jorginho was purely a 'panic buy' and nothing more. However, once the dust had settled, the bigger picture started to emerge.

Not only is he an established and serial winning Premier League player who adds vital experience to a young team pushing for the title, but he is also someone who has been appreciated by the Gunners camp for a long time. According to The Athletic, Arsenal planned to sign two out of Thomas Partey, Houssem Aouar, and Jorginho in 2020. They of course ended up with just one in Partey, but it’s added that Jorginho was not simply a backup option as he is greatly admired by technical staff, including Arteta.

Nevertheless, the only way Jorginho could prove the doubters wrong was by producing on the pitch, and that's exactly what he has done. Following a positive showing against the current league champions last week, the former Chelsea man put in a Man of the Match performance against Villa at the weekend, with his long-range effort in the 93rd minute completing an impressive Arsenal comeback.

It may have gone down as an own goal thanks to Emi Martinez's assistance, but if Jorginho didn't shoot, then it would never have happened and Arsenal probably don't win the game. His strike rounded off another impressive display filled with composure, leadership and progressive play, resulting in his name being chanted by the away fans at full-time.

Having previously voiced his delight and relief of bringing Jorginho into the club, Arteta vindicated the signing even further during his post-match press conference.

"I certainly didn’t see that quality of him - scoring from deep," Arteta said. "The biggest quality he has is that he makes other people look better, better than what you actually are. He’s made a huge impact already on the boys and the staff and hopefully our fans. I hope people can see that because I thought he was tremendous today."

An injury blow to Partey was felt by everyone connected to the club last week, with the Ghanaian playing an integral role in Arsenal's title challenge so far. Not so long ago, the Gunners would have looked lost without him, but Jorginho has ensured that is no longer the case as he steps up to the challenge.
