Mikel Arteta reminded why he should sign Premier League gem that helped Arsenal's top-four push

Arsenal were reminded about a potential answer to their midfield problems after Tottenham’s embarrassing defeat on Wednesday evening.

James Ward-Prowse was excellent for the Saints as they came out 3-2 winners against Spurs, with the Englishman providing a crucial assist for the winner.

Ward-Prowse has been the most important player for his club, with a string of excellent performances showing why Aston Villa had a £30 million bid rejected for the midfielder over the summer transfer window.

With doubts over the quality and depth in Arsenal's midfield, the Southampton captain should certainly be considered as an option for Mikel Arteta, in addition to reported targets Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves.

Southampton’s win against Spurs has meant that qualification for a Champions League place next season is in the Gunners’ hands after Manchester United also dropped points away to Burnley at Turf Moor.

If Arteta manages to propel his side into a top-four position, then this will speed up the rebuilding process he is currently trying to implement on the north London side.

Another way the rebuilding process can accelerate is with a midfield signing to partner alongside Thomas Partey.

Granit Xhaka has been used regularly in a pivot next to the Ghanaian, however, football.london understands that the Swiss international is still attracting interest from Italian side Roma.

Albert Sambi Lokonga is next in line currently to be the midfield partner alongside Partey, and has often been used as the anchorman when Arteta’s preferred midfield isn't available for selection.

Despite the excellent potential the youngster possesses, he still has a lot to learn and is not yet fully adapted to the pace of the Premier League, meaning a more experienced player would help elevate Arsenal.

Ward-Prowse would certainly be a decent option for the Gunners and he has been a crucial player for the Saints for almost a decade now, which has given him tons of experience in the Premier League.

His wonderful set-piece ability can be a real game-changer and he is certainly an enforcer in the midfield.

The Englishman’s excellent performance against Spurs should have also given Arteta the extra incentive to possibly push for a transfer in the summer window.
