Mikel Arteta clearly heeded Jurgen Klopp advice amid lack of Arsenal transfers

Mikel Arteta clearly heeded Jurgen Klopp's transfer advice this January, despite a slightly worrying lack of business.

The Gunners brought in three players over the January transfer window, while allowing an alarming 13 to leave in total.

Arsenal had been linked with moves for Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak and Espanyol’s Raul De Tomas as Arteta looked to add more firepower to his attack.

However, despite the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the only signing made at the Emirates was USA defender Auston Trusty, who will remain on loan at Colorado Rapids until the end of the season.

It would have been easy for Arteta to make a number of panic buys on deadline day to ensure he had enough depth in his squad.

But the words of Liverpool boss Klopp may well have been ringing in his ears as the German explained his view on the winter window.

After the signing of Luis Diaz, the German said: “I have always been a believer in only signing players in January if you would want to sign them in the summer, and that’s very much the case with Luis."

It will be a battle of keeping his players fit then for Arteta for the rest of the season as he looks to continue to challenge for a place in the top four.

The Spaniard admitted a little over a week ago that Arsenal had been trying to bring in new faces in January, but were struggling to find the calibre of player the club were after.

"It was what we planned but the market is difficult and complicated," Arteta said after the goalless draw with Burnley.

"We knew that, but it's a lot to manage. We have to make the right decisions with players we believe are going to really help us and try to bring the ones that can take us to the next level.

"We are certainly trying, but whether we are going to be able to do it, let's see. It's not only about our intention, but a lot of [things] that are needed to happen.

"The players who come here have to take us to the next level. We already have a level and we want to set much better standards than we already have. That's how we want to recruit."
