Mikel Arteta already knows how to unleash Alvaro Morata if he seals Arsenal transfer

Alvaro Morata is the latest striker to be linked with a January transfer to Arsenal.

However, with the 11pm deadline fast approaching, the Gunners will need to act fast in order to make the Spain international their first major signing of the winter window.

It's no secret that a new centre-forward has been a priority for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal technical director Edu this month, but so far they've not been able to complete their mission.

There had been hope of signing Dusan Vlahovic but he's since joined Juventus from Fiorentina, whilst the Gunners would most likely need to activate Alexander Isak's €90million (£75.4million) release clause at Real Sociedad in order to sign him.

With a deal for the Sweden international looking unlikely, reports coming out of Spain suggest that the north London outfit have decided which striker to pursue on deadline day.

According to AS, Arteta wants to sign Morata.

The former Chelsea striker is currently on loan at Juventus from Atletico Madrid and had been linked with a return to Spain, although his parent club aren't interested in selling him to a direct rival in Barcelona.

This stance is good news for Arsenal and it's been reported that one of Arteta's coaches, Miguel Molina, has already spoken with the 29-year-old in an attempt to convince him that he's the missing link at the club.

With that said, the report does state that whilst Morata listened to Molina with interest, he feels it's not the right time for a return to London.

The Spaniard's spell in the Premier League with Chelsea got off to a fine start as he was in contention for the 2017/18 Golden Boot award alongside Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane by November.

At the time, it looked like £60million well spent.

But following a back injury over the festive period, Morata's never rediscovered his best form at Stamford Bridge and eventually joined Atleti permanently in the summer of 2020 following an 18-month loan spell.

Whilst a return to England looks unlikely, if Morata was to perform a stunning U-turn and complete a move to Arsenal, love and support from the club and supporters would be key to getting the best out of him.

"I had lost confidence in myself previously," Morata said when explaining where things went wrong with Chelsea as per the Daily Mail. "I was very upset by the opinion of the people in England. I think they caught me in the middle of everything.

"I didn't quite feel loved or appreciated by the club or the fans. I started very well at Chelsea, but an injury in the end leaves you a bit stuck.

"As bad as it was, I still scored 15 goals and won the FA Cup… but I was out of the World Cup, and for me that was the hardest thing that could happen to me in my life."

It's clear that Morata has unfinished business in England, but whether Arteta can convince him to change his mind about a return remains to be seen.
