Midori Francis is reportedly leaving Grey’s Anatomy after two seasons on the medical drama. The 30-year-old actress is in negotiations to return for season 21 to wrap up the story for her character, Mika Yasuda. However, she will not be a series regular after season 20, which is currently airing on ABC.
Francis joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy for season 19 in 2022 as one of the new interns at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Alongside her were Alexis Floyd, Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, and Lucas Adams.
In an interview, Francis expressed her admiration for Sandra Oh's portrayal of Cristina Yang in the earlier seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, highlighting the impact of seeing an Asian actor in a prominent role on primetime television.
Another cast member, Jake Borelli, who played Levi Schmitt since season 14, will also not return as a series regular for the next season.
Grey’s Anatomy, which premiered in 2005, has seen several casting changes over the years. The only remaining original cast members are Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., and Ellen Pompeo, who has been with the show since the beginning.
Despite reducing her involvement in season 19, Pompeo remains an executive producer and continues to narrate episodes and make guest appearances throughout the season.
The show has been renewed for season 21, with creator Shonda Rhimes expressing gratitude for the loyalty of the fans and praising showrunner Meg Marinis for keeping the series vibrant and compelling.
Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
