Midlothian firefighters tackle ongoing inferno next to Shell petrol station

A major fire has broken out next to a petrol station in Midlothian with a large Scottish Fire and Rescue Service presence in attendance.

The SFRS say that they were called to tackle the blaze by concerned residents at around 7.15pm on Friday March 17.

The flames could be seen swirling into the sky as it engulfed an entire building that is positioned next to the Shell garage on Mayfield Road.

Fire appliances can be seen in a video with hoses stretching across the road that has been closed for traffic.

Smoke can be seen billowing into the sky as flames rage throughout the building.

One local, Chris Keppie who runs Chris Keppie painter and decorator based in the capital, has said that the site of the fire broke out at a former caravan storage space and that they noticed the tall flames shortly after 7pm.

On what he witnessed he said: “The fire service are doing a cracking job.

“It did look like they were struggling to get water at one point and had to get it from a few streets up.

“But they are doing a brilliant job.”

The SFRS confirmed that they had four pump appliances in attendance and a height appliance.

They said that the incident remains ongoing.

A SFRS spokepserson said: “We got the call at 7.15pm and we have four pumping appliances and a height appliance there.

“The incident is still ongoing.”
