The Championship season gets underway in just three weeks' time and managers continue to work tirelessly to get their squads in shape ahead of the big kick-off.
Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson is one of those still in the market as he looks to bring in at least two new players in a centre-back and central midfielder. He has already been active with four new arrivals in Mark Sykes, Kal Naismith, Kane Wilson and goalkeeper Stefan Bajic.
On Friday, the Robins were linked with a switch for Manchester City winger Marlos Moreno according to reports from Colombia alongside Sunderland and Norwich. However, with Pearson's reluctance to play with wingers in his favoured 3-5-2 formation, a deal would seem unlikely.
City were also linked with a move for striker Felipe Caicedo who most recently had a loan switch with Italian giants Inter Milan. The 33-year-old is set to leave Genoa following their relegation but Bristol Live understands there is no truth to the speculation.
There will undoubtedly be more names linked with a switch to BS3 between now and when the transfer window closes on September 1 but as the rumour mill continues to do the rounds, we take a look at the latest Championship news and headlines in the paper round-up.
Championship clubs battle for free agent
Middlesbrough are looking to join the transfer race for out of contract right-back Ryan Nyambe. The 24-year-old is a free agent after leaving Blackburn Rovers at the end of June.
The Lancashire Telegraph write how Chris Wilder's side are just one of the clubs interested with West Brom, Stoke and Bournemouth also paying close attention. One club in France are understood to be keen with competition for his signature increasing.
Middlesbrough have already signed former Rovers midfielder Darragh Lenihan on a free transfer this summer, one of three summer arrivals as Wilder looks to push for promotion to the Premier League.
Nyambe enjoyed an impressive season for Rovers, making 31 appearances and would be seen as a coup on a free transfer for whichever club he ends up at.
Huddersfield Town exodus could continue
The Terriers have already lost their manager following Carlos Corberan's shock departure last week, and now their two star players could be heading to the Premier League.
According to Yorkshire Live, their head of football operations Leigh Bromby has conceded Harry Toffolo and Lewis O'Brien are likely to depart if and when a top-flight club comes calling. O'Brien has been a long-term target of Leeds while Nottingham Forest are looking closely at his availability with a release clause in his contract.
Forest are also looking at left-back Toffolo having failed to extend his contract with the Championship side. He has entered the final year of his deal.
The club have made three signings this summer with winger Connor Mahoney and defender Will Boyle arriving on free transfers. Midfielder David Kasumu also arrived from MK Dons. Huddersfield appointed Danny Schofield as their new head coach on Friday, having been promoted to the first team set up under Corberan in August 2020.
Vincent Kompany set to raid former club
New Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is looking at bringing in midfielder Josh Cullen to the Championship from his former club Anderlecht. The 26-year-old is a Republic of Ireland international and joined the Belgian side from West Ham in 2020.
Belgian publication Het Nieuwsblad report how Cullen missed Anderlecht training on Friday with a deal moving closer to completion. They claim Burnley are willing to pay £1.8million to bring him back to England.
That would go against Kompany's promise not to raid his old club. He previously said: "At the moment, I don’t think about getting players from Anderlecht. I don’t want to harm my former club. That is far from my intention.”
Kompany has wasted little time in improving his side as they target an immediate return to the Premier League. Luke McNally joined from Oxford, alongside Scott Twine, CJ Egan-Riley from Manchester City, defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis on loan and midfielder Samuel Bastien.
Millwall hoping to complete loan deal for Premier League midfielder
Millwall want to bring in another Leeds player on loan following in the footsteps of Charlie Cresswell. Jamie Shackleton is a man in demand with the Lions one of the clubs looking to lure him to the Championship alongside Reading and Blackpool.
According to Leeds Live, Reading were leading the chase for the central midfielder but Millwall are believed to have put together a bigger financial package that covers a larger proportion of his wages.
The 22-year-old hasn't boarded the plane for their pre-season trip to Australia, all-but confirming his switch to the Championship is close. The report adds how the loan move could also include the option to make it permanent.
