Microsoft’s latest AI image generator aims for accuracy over hype, but it’s not top‑tier just yet

MAI-Image-2 samples.

Microsoft just announced a new AI model for image generation. MAI-Image-2 arrives just over five months since Microsoft unveiled MAI-Image-1.

Images created with the new tool from Microsoft should feel more realistic. Microsoft worked with photographers, designers, and visual storytellers to make MAI-Image-2.

"MAI-Image-2 is built for creatives who want images that feel like they exist in the world, with natural light, accurate skin tones, environments that feel lived-in," said Microsoft. "Creatives can now spend less time fixing in post-production and more time making."

Realism is paramount for AI image generation. "Microslop" trended on social media as people mocked the tech giant. Microsoft banned some users from mentioning the term on the official Copilot Discord server. That term is more about forcing AI everywhere, but the general concept of producing AI slop is a common topic of discussion.

Microsoft is far from the only company to face criticism for unrealistic AI creations. NVIDIA is neck deep in hot water following the announcement of DLSS 5. That tool uses AI to "deliver a dramatic leap in visual realism," according to Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA.

But many disagree with Huang and have criticized DLSS 5 for removing artistry and chasing unrealistic beauty standards.

"This looks like AI fan art made by someone getting ready to subscribe to ChatGPT," said our Michael Hoglund.

Of course, there's a big difference between making still images with a model like MAI-Image-2 and rendering frames in video games, but realism is important in both cases.

Microsoft's post introducing MAI-Image-2 begins by highlighting the fact that the model ranks third on the Arena.ai leaderboard. That is a significant improvement from MAI-Image-1, which held the #9 spot at launch, but it's a bit funny to see Microsoft tout the ranking of its new model when MAI-Image-2 sits squarely below models from Google and OpenAI.

Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI and key player in the revamped leadership of Copilot, discussed MAI-Image-2 on X.

Microsoft states that MAI-Image-2 consistently creates text within images. Many AI models struggle with text, making it difficult to create graphics and illustrations with characters.

You can preview MAI-Image-2 through the MAI Playground, though testing is limited to certain regions.

API access is available starting today for select customers. Soon, any developer will be able to access the tool on Microsoft Foundry.

MAI-Image-2 is also rolling out to Copilot and Bing Image Creator.

💬 Will Microsoft overcome accusations of AI slop with tools like MAI-Image-2?

Microsoft's new AI image generation model seems to be capable of creating realistic images, but the tech giant has a lot of work to do to restore its reputation.

Do you think tools that create realistic images will help Microsoft's image? Let me know in the comments.
