A Michigan woman has reflected on how her father's multi-million-dollar lottery jackpot transformed her family's circumstances before the money gradually disappeared, saying the experience taught her the importance of financial planning and family unity.
Leeann Wahr shared her family's story with 13 ON YOUR SIDE , recalling that her father won the lottery in 2013 after buying a ticket at Bonzer's in Custer, Michigan. At the time, he was facing financial hardship after losing his property and had become somewhat estranged from the family.

Lottery win transformed family's circumstances
According to Wahr, her father received about $13.3 million after opting for the lump-sum payout.
She said he purchased a house for her sister, where the family later moved, and the sudden financial change brought excitement to their lives.
"It was so fun," Wahr told the outlet, recalling shopping trips where the family could buy almost anything they wanted. She said the transition from having very little to financial security was significant, although the situation later deteriorated.
Gambling and spending reduced the fortune
Wahr said her father had long enjoyed gambling and continued playing the lottery regularly after winning the jackpot.
She also attributed the family's financial decline to expensive spending habits, including buying brand-new vehicles for several family members.
According to Wahr, the family later relocated to Nevada after her father became overwhelmed by people in Michigan asking him for money.
"He was a little bit of a gambler," Wahr said, adding that he played the lottery frequently.
Family story shared after father's death
Following her father's death in 2023, Wahr began posting videos on TikTok to process the family's experience and discuss how their lives changed after the lottery win.
She said she hopes the story serves as a lesson for others who may one day win a large lottery prize. Although she has received numerous comments and messages since sharing her experience, she said she tries not to pay attention to outside opinions.
Wahr advised future lottery winners to seek professional financial guidance, saying, "If you win the lottery, get a financial advisor."
She also stressed the importance of family, adding, "Family is everything. Stick together. Things happen, and you gotta roll with the punches."
Lottery win left a lasting impact
Despite how events unfolded, Wahr said she believes the lottery win ultimately had a positive influence on her life.
She said the financial security improved her confidence during childhood, helping her feel better about herself by allowing her to wear clean clothes to school and providing stability during a difficult period.
